Southwestern Illinois College

A new Student Union/Liberal Arts facility was built on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College with a mercantile area and an outside dining terrace. This tension structure provides weather protection and creates a comfortable relaxing atmosphere for the students. The client also requested that the fabric match the official school logo blue color.

Lawrence created a 5 panel interconnected-frame tension structure, 135’ x 35’, on 13 steel columns with Polyfab Architec 400 Aquamarine color HPDE fabric. The tension structure was designed to be installed on a 2nd floor roof deck. The posts were installed in steel boots welded to the building structural members. Engineering calculations directed the structure members have additional cross bracings. Provisions to prevent water seepage to the finished 1st floor level had to be addressed with running fabric roof membrane “boots” over 13 posts.

Undoubtedly, this dramatically striking fabric tension structure is eye catching over the entire college campus grounds. The lighted structure in the evenings proves to be a spectacular sight. The client and students are very happy to be able to utilize the outdoor seating in their new lounge area.
